This is a true account of a tragedy that happened ten years ago. It takes place in Great Falls, Montana but moves everywhere in the state and then abroad in the Caribbean Sea and back to the Blackfeet Indian nation in a dialysis unit. The story starts off with the grandmother's death in the Prologue. She cries for Jesus right before she dies and the author is served divorce papers. Then it immediately goes into the back story leading up to her grandmother's death.
Kelly, a nurse, meets Kane, a logger on a blind date. They fall in love and raise their four children together. Kelly works two jobs so she can support the family and put Kane through college. It isn't long that Kane becomes abusive to her. Kelly kicks him out one time then takes him back. Another time they separate and reunite and she becomes pregnant with their fifth child. She continues to try very hard for their family's sake resorting to psychiatrists and marriage counselors at the end out of her love for Kane and their kids.
Their lifestyle is very good now. Both are R.N.s, have a beautiful new home, a pontoon boat, a RV and security as far as wealth is concerned. When she can no longer put up with his cruel abuse and physical brutality along with suicide threats, she serves him a restraining order when he tells her that she needs to be hit over the head with a 2x4.
Part Two begins with the separation and divorce proceeding. Out of rage and revenge, Kane will not allow her to have anything. Four court trials later, Kelly's lawyer walks out on her. Kelly has no one to help her now fight Kane and he continues to be violent towards her. Nothing is done about it although the judge is aware of what is happening. Kelly is driven to a nervous breakdown by Kane's ongoing abuse of her. Her life now totally destroyed, she communes with God and builds an altar for battered women and children in her bedroom. Crying, she vows to Him that if He would help her, she would do everything in her power to help other battered women when this was all over.
Note from the author:
There are many subplots in this novel: a scandal, romances, family history, patient stories, substance abuse and mental illness. It shows the changes that I endured during this horrific time. Yet the most profound was my supernatural spiritual conversion I experienced. It was only through God's help that I survived and the signs that He was giving me all through it.
This book is only recommended for adult reading. It may seem controversial to some. It is a complicated story, but very easy to follow and reads fast. I wrote it so others could understand the hardships facing battered women. Hopefully, men will stop hurting women and women will stop tolerating abuse. And mainly, I wrote it to start a ministry for battered women.
